The Importance of Surrounding Yourself with Art (My Personal Story)

We often hear that art is important for our wellbeing.

Maybe you agree. Maybe you disagree. Or maybe you’ve never really thought about what that statement truly means.

Today, I want to share my own experience — and how surrounding myself with art has shaped my life in ways I didn’t understand until much later.

Growing Up Without Luxury — But With Creativity

I was born in a small town in Eastern Poland in the early 1990s. We were closer to poor than rich. But looking back, most families around us lived the same way. That was simply the reality of Poland at that time.

We didn’t grow up in a modern or stylish home. There were no designer interiors or expensive decorations.

But there was something else.

My mum decorated our house with things she created herself. Because we didn’t have much money, she had to be incredibly creative. She used whatever materials she had and transformed them into something beautiful.

At the time, I didn’t realize it — but it was art.

She crocheted entire curtains for our windows. I can’t even imagine how many hours that must have taken. She turned simple tablecloths into something special by adding delicate embroidered patterns. She collected small, colorful elements and arranged them together to create decorative constellations on our walls and shelves.

Everything was made on a budget.

But it brought light into our small home.

And that light mattered.

The Small Art Details That Shaped Me

Back then, I didn’t understand that these little handmade pieces carried meaning. I didn’t see them as art.

Only years later — after moving out, living in rental apartments, changing cities and spaces — did I begin to notice something.

Wherever I lived, I felt a deep need to add small artistic touches. I needed something on the walls. Something personal. Something that would transform a temporary space into a home.

I searched for small decor pieces in second-hand shops. I made things myself. Eventually, I started painting and hanging my own original paintings on the walls.

Each time, something shifted.

The space felt safer. Warmer. More mine.

That is when I understood: living with art changes how we feel in a space.

Art Creates Energy

I truly believe that everything carries energy.

And it is up to us to decide which energy we allow into our homes.

Now, as a conscious adult — and as an artist — I intentionally surround myself with art that brings positive energy. I choose bright colors. I choose paintings that remind me of hope, strength, and light. I choose objects that make me breathe easier when I look at them.

And it works.

When I come home, I feel good there.

And I know that a big part of that feeling comes from the art that surrounds me.

Why Surrounding Yourself with Art Matters

Art does not have to be expensive or grand. It can be handmade. It can be second-hand. It can be something you create yourself.

But when you surround yourself with meaningful art, you are shaping your emotional environment.

Your home becomes more than just walls and furniture. It becomes a space that supports you. And that, in my experience, is the true importance of living with art.

If you are building your own space right now, ask yourself:

What kind of energy do I want to live in?

Because art is not just decoration.
Art is atmosphere.
Art is intention.
Art is emotional architecture.

And it has the power to quietly change how we feel — every single day.
